Aliens Move from District 9
An interesting science fiction film was offered by TriStar Pictures in August 2009. District 9 tells about aliens called “the Prawns” who landed near Johannesburg, South Africa in 1990. People were welcome to them in the beginning, but with the time the camp where the aliens lived turned into a militarized ghetto called District 9.
The private organization, Multi-National United had a mission to move all Prawns, who multiplied quickly to 1.8 million residents, to a new place, District 10 which was 240 kilometers northwest from District 9.
The story was borrowed from a 2005 short film, Alive in Joburg, and the title was inspired by historical event that happened in South Africa in District Six during the racial separation in the second half of the XX century. In order to make the film look more realistic, the team was mainly shooting in Chiawelo, Soweto, South Africa in a place that was a real poor neighborhood where people lived until the government decided to move them out of there.
The producers spent $30 million on the development of District 9, but on the very first opening week-end they have already collected more than they used: only North-American theatres brought them back $37 million. The total worldwide box-office collection was almost $163 million.
