Fifth Element Is the Only Way Out…

August 22nd, 2008

The Fifth Element story was written by French comic writers and if you are a French comic book reader you can see much of their influence in the movie. It tells us an interesting idea of human survival with the fight against the pure evil.

The elements, which hold impressive power, have been created a long time ago and the information about them has been well kept among the very narrow circle of people. One day, when the black planet gets close to the Earth, the time comes to collect all the five elements together since they are the only weapon people can use in this fight.

French director Luc Besson collected a wonderful crew of American actors: Bruce Willis, Milla Yovovich, Gary Oldman, Ian Holm and Chris Tucker, who did a great job in the creation of The Fifth Element. French fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier worked on the costumes for the film and produced 954 outfits for it.

The main part of the movie is placed in the futuristic New-York, but none of the scenes was filmed there. Mainly the shooting was done in England at the Pinewood Studios. The scenes of Fhloston Paradise concert were made at Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. The beginning of the movie was shot in Mauritania.

The Fifth Element was well accepted by both critics and audience. It was chosen as the opening movie for the Cannes Film Festival in 1997. The producers spent $80 million on the creation of the movie and it grossed more than three times of the expence: $263.9 million.

The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Effects and Best Sound Effects Editing. The movie received seven nominations in Cesar awards and won three of them: Best Director, Best Cinematograpgy and Best Production Design.
