Igor Is a Bright Light in the Evil World of Malaria

February 27th, 2009

For those who liked Corpse Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas the new computer animated film Igor will be an interesting thing to watch. It was not written, produced and directed by Tim Burton as the other two, but the image of crookedly looking people with big round eyes definitely reminds Burton’s works.

The film made various impressions on different circles of society. The actors liked the script a lot; in fact, this is the primary reason why Igor has many A-list actors in its cast like John Cusack, Steve Bescemi, Eddie Izzard and Molly Shannon.

Critics gave Igor mostly negative and mixed reviews. Rotten Tomatoes has 35% positive articles while Metacritic gave 40 out of 100. Entertainment Insiders wrote, “It is a pale impostor lacking in the three dimensional feel of Burton’s animated classics.” At the same time Daily Telegraph thinks differently, noting, “If you are the type that wishes filmmaker Tim Burton still put his name to funky animated monstrosities like The Nightmare Before Christmas, then Igor will fit the bill just nicely.” Many reviewers see the political subtext in the movie saying it reminds the America’s second Bush administration.

Despite critics’ opinion Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is proud of the film and decided to send Igor to the Academy Award jury for the Best Animated Feature.
