Vampires Attack Alaska for 30 Days of Night

July 22nd, 2008

Towns at the far north are unique by the length of light and darkness time. In one of Alaskan towns, Barrow, darkness in winter lasts for a whole month. It is a great time for any kind of night creatures, especially for vampires. They come and all the residents of the town will have no escape. Wonderful blood feast for 30 Days of Night!

In 2002 a writer Steve Niles, an illustrator Ben Templestith and publishing company IDW Publishing put their efforts together to create a horror comic book about vampires in a little Alaskan town. Their idea received support from Columbia Pictures, who was interested to film the story.

30 Days of Night was directed by David Slade and the filming took place in Alaska and New Zealand. It is an interesting fact it took the crew almost as much time to shoot the movie as it says in the title. They exceeded by three days only.

In the first weekend 30 Days of Night collected half of what the sponsors spent on it. Totally the worldwide box-office gross was almost $71 million.

The film received mixed reviews, but did really well comparing to the other horror movies. Chicago Sun-Times’ critic, Roger Ebert, noted 30 Days of Night is well-made and “is better than it needs to be”. He advises horror fans to watch it.
