With the Red Violin Music Will Never Die
An interesting story was created by Don McKellar and Francois Girard and turned into a movie by the union of Canadian, Italian and English movie makers. The concept of The Red Violin is strongly connected to the novel Antonietta by John Hersey. We are used to study the history of a nation or a biography of one person, but this picture tells us about the lifetime of a red violin.
Not many material things exist for many years, but this musical instrument has been created more than three hundred years ago and still lives, bringing anger, sorrow and passion to its owners. The violin traveled around the world, having been created in an Italian town, Cremona, it went through Germany, Austria, England, China and finally ended up in Canada. This is where we “meet” our main character and learn its story before the violin will go to its new owner.
The idea of the red violin came from the Stradivarius violin, called the Red Mendelssohn, which was carved in 1720 and is still actively used by Elizabeth Pitcarn, one of the greatest violin soloists of the modern time.
An interesting fact is the characters in different countries in the movie speak their native languages making the story sound even more real.
The Red Violin is a good inspiring film, which attracts those who love history and music. It won many awards among which is the Academy Award for Best Original Score, 8 Genie Awards and 9 Jutra Awrds.
